November 18, 2008 (New York, NY) -- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Chair of the New York Film Critics Circle 2008 and critic for Entertainment Weekly, announced today that three new members have joined the ranks of the illustrious critics group. They are:

  • Karen Durbin / Elle Magazine
  • Dana Stevens / Slate.com
  • Stephanie Zacharek / Salon.com

The members will hold their annual vote on the year's best in film on Wednesday, December 10th. The Circle's awards ceremony will take place at Strata in New York City on Monday, January 5th.

Chair Lisa Schwarzbaum says, “With the addition of these three fine members, the Circle honors its dedication to critical excellence. And as we head towards our 75th anniversary in 2009, it's especially fitting that, for the first time, the country's oldest and most venerable critics' organization welcomes distinguished New York colleagues from two of the Web's most respected on-line publications. Have no doubt, we're committed to the vitality of passionate film criticism for the next 75 years, too.”

Founded in 1935, the Circle's membership includes critics from New York-based daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, and—for the first time—qualifying on-line general interest publications. Every year in December the organization meets in New York to vote on awards for the previous calendar year's films. The Circle's awards are often viewed as harbingers of the Oscar nominations, which are announced each February. The Circle's awards are also viewed -- perhaps more accurately -- as a principled alternative to the Oscars, honoring merit in a forum that is immune to commercial and political pressures.
